Our feeling of shame and depravity should drive us to God for healing.

Our feeling of shame and guilt should drive us to God for healing.

Why are you hiding?

When Adam and Eve have eaten the forbidden fruit of knowledge and evil, their eyes were open and felt ashame of their nakeness.

Genesis 3:7-8
New Living Translation (NLT)
7 At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.

They hid from God because of their shame.

Genesis 3:8-11
New Living Translation (NLT)
8 When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man[a] and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. 9 Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”10 He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”11 “Who told you that you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?”

God covered their shame by clothing them with animal skins.

Genesis 3:21
New Living Translation (NLT)
21 And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife.

Guilt comes as a result of Sin. When Adam disobey God, this guilt was pass down to us.

In the Old testament people have to offer guilt offering to God even for any unintentional sin commit against the Lord.

Leviticus 5:17-19
New Living Translation (NLT)
17 “Suppose you sin by violating one of the Lord’s commands. Even if you are unaware of what you have done, you are guilty and will be punished for your sin. 18 For a guilt offering, you must bring to the priest your own ram with no defects, or you may buy one of equal value. Through this process the priest will purify you from your unintentional sin, making you right with the Lord, and you will be forgiven. 19 This is a guilt offering, for you have been guilty of an offense against the Lord.”

For God's people, guilt is a very miserable feeling. So much so that if God did not relieve you from your guilt, you will die from it.

Exodus 28:42-43
New Living Translation (NLT)
42 Also make linen undergarments for them, to be worn next to their bodies, reaching from their hips to their thighs. 43 These must be worn whenever Aaron and his sons enter the Tabernacle[a] or approach the altar in the Holy Place to perform their priestly duties. Then they will not incur guilt and die. This is a permanent law for Aaron and all his descendants after him.

For those who have sinned against the Lord, you know what I meant.
How miserable and rotten you will feel about yourself. It is as though you have just committed a murder.

Until you have confess your sin, your guilt remains to haunt you.

Seek healing by confessing your Sin to God or a christian whom you trust.

Psalm 32:3-5
New Living Translation (NLT)
When I refused to confess my sin,
    my body wasted away,
and I groaned all day long.
Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me.
My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Interlude
Finally, I confessed all my sins to you
and stopped trying to hide my guilt.
I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.”
And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Interlude

James 5:16
New Living Translation (NLT)
16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

"Do not be content with whispering your sin to God. That is good. Very good. But he offers us something more: “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed” (James 5:16). There is a release and healing that flows from confessing not only to God in the secret place of your heart, but also to a trusted friend, or to the person you have offended. The tender words, “I’m sorry, will you forgive me?” are one of the surest paths to joy. (When I Don't Desire God, 224)" http://www.desiringgod.org/blog/posts/fighting-presumptuous-sins

Judas is a typical example of one who died from guilt.

Matthew 27:5-8
New Living Translation (NLT)
5 Then Judas threw the silver coins down in the Temple and went out and hanged himself.
But getting rid of the money didn't alleviate his guilt. Jesus was still going to die and Judas couldn't reverse what he'd done. Utterly in despair, he committed suicide.

He did not turn to Jesus for forgivness and to relief him from his guilt and thus out of great misery he went and hang himself.

A Warning against Pride

15 Listen and pay attention!
Do not be arrogant, for the Lord has spoken.
16 Give glory to the Lord your God
    before it is too late.
Acknowledge him before he brings darkness upon you,
causing you to stumble and fall on the darkening mountains.
For then, when you look for light,
you will find only terrible darkness and gloom.
17 And if you still refuse to listen,
I will weep alone because of your pride.
My eyes will overflow with tears,
because the Lord’s flock will be led away into exile.

Only Jesus can forgive Sin.
